Chocolate almonds

When you hear the word "Sicily" you think of sun-drenched fields, magnificent views and magnificent sunsets in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Italy's uncompromising approach to its food production standards and belief in high quality ingredients have earned the country a reputation for culinary excellence. This is thanks in part to the incredibly nutrient-rich soils, which make the country a perfect place to grow plant-based products.

Almonds have a tradition in Sicily

Almond trees have thrived in Sicily for centuries and are associated with love and loyalty - a tradition rooted in Greek history and the story of Phyllis and Demophon. Due to the high level of domestic consumption, only a few almonds have always been exported. However, we have managed to offer the precious kernels in our range, which we are very proud of.

The almond trees (Prunus dulcis) grow up to 10 meters high. In spring they bloom in all their glory. Drupes form from the fertilized flowers of the tree. They ripen in the fall and have a leathery skin that makes them look like a green peach. Eventually this outer shell dries and cracks and the almond nuts are ready to harvest - usually in July or August.

Harvesting has been carried out by local farming communities for generations. When 95% of the fruit on the tree is ready to be harvested, farmers spread tarpaulins under the trees and begin shaking the almonds off the trees, first by hand and later with long objects. But we thought. Historically, the Arabs used almonds to make sweets such as nougat, cookies, biscotti and marzipan. So we asked ourselves whether we too could turn our delicious almonds into a sweet snack.

After much thought and experimentation, we decided to dip our almonds in the most delicious, plant-based chocolate we could find. The resulting chocolate almonds are not only slightly addictive, but thanks to their high cocoa content, they are also much healthier than many conventional sweets. They therefore have a place of honor on our shelves and are one of our most popular products.
